Solar Power & EnergyThe Sun is a giant ball of burning gases 93 million miles from Earth. Its heat & light travel so fast that they only take approximately 8 minutes to reach us. The heat & light from the sun is known as solar energy. The Sun is the original source of almost all energy used on Earth, directly producing solar energy in the form of radiation, light and heat. As this supply of energy from the sun is continuous, these energy sources can be constantly replenished and are therefore known as renewable energies. The Earth receives as much energy from the sun in 1 hour as the total human population uses in a whole year - about 1018 Kilowatt hours (kWh) - and, with ever-evolving technologies continuing to improve efficiency and reduce prices, it is highly likely that most of our energy requirements could soon be produced from solar energy... The depletion of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas), which have taken millions of years to produce, cannot be regenerated on a human timescale. Fossil fuel reserves can possibly provide us with enough energy for several decades, but at an ever-rising cost - both environmentally and financially... We have therefore already entered an age where efficiently harnessing solar energy is a neccessary, attractive and logical step in our evolution...
